Merck Explores Hologram Technology to Transform Healthcare Communication

Could life-sized holograms and artificial intelligence change how pharmaceutical companies communicate with patients and raise awareness about important health issues?
Merck is exploring an innovative approach to healthcare communication by introducing holographic technology and AI-powered virtual characters into its disease-awareness initiatives. Through a collaboration with technology company Proto, the pharmaceutical company is using life-sized digital displays to create interactive experiences that engage audiences beyond traditional healthcare advertising.

The technology allows realistic, three-dimensional virtual figures to appear inside specialized displays, creating the impression of a person standing directly in front of an audience. When combined with artificial intelligence, these digital characters can interact with visitors, answer questions, and communicate educational information in a more conversational format.
One example of this approach took place in Vietnam, where Merck introduced a virtual influencer named Minah to raise awareness about human papillomavirus (HPV) and vaccination. Appearing through Proto's holographic displays at vaccination centers and healthcare clinics, Minah engaged visitors in conversations about HPV and the importance of preventing HPV-related cancers. Across a ten-location campaign, Merck reported more than 2,400 direct interactions and over 7,000 social media engagements.
Building on this initiative, Merck expanded its use of holographic experiences into additional markets. In Italy, the company introduced a localized HPV-focused virtual character at music festivals, aiming to reach younger audiences in environments where conventional healthcare messaging might receive less attention.
The technology has also entered the United States. During the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's annual conference in Washington, D.C., Merck introduced an interactive experience focused on clinical trial awareness. Visitors engaged with educational content designed to increase understanding of clinical research and encourage conversations about participation in clinical trials.
These initiatives highlight a broader shift in pharmaceutical communication, as companies experiment with immersive technologies to make healthcare information more accessible, engaging, and interactive. Rather than relying exclusively on static advertisements or informational materials, holographic experiences offer audiences opportunities to actively participate in educational conversations.
However, the effectiveness of these approaches will depend on more than technological novelty. Ensuring medical accuracy, maintaining transparency, and evaluating whether engagement translates into improved health understanding remain important considerations.
As pharmaceutical companies continue exploring artificial intelligence and immersive experiences, Merck's initiatives demonstrate how emerging technologies could create new opportunities for disease awareness and patient education. Whether holograms become a widely adopted communication channel remains uncertain, but their potential to connect healthcare information with audiences in unexpected settings is attracting growing interest.
